Mynämäen Pallo -53 vs Kuuvuoren Laaki 1 - 1 (0 - 1)

Mynämäki Urheilukeskus - Mynämäki 5.8.2015

Mynämäki Urheilukeskus was to be the venue for the division five game between Mynämäen Pallo and Kuuvuoren Laaki. The close proximity between the two teams in the league table ensured that the game would be a tightly contested affair between two well-matched teams. The pitch conditions would add to the excitement of the game as the wet natural grass proved quite an unfamiliar setting for some of the KuuLa players. As one has come to expect during the current season, an admirable amount of KuuLa faithfuls had traveled to Mynämäki to cheer on their team adding to the atmosphere surrounding the pitch.

The game started with MynPa firmly in the driver's seat. With the KuuLa players still trying to adjust to the pitch conditions, MynPa swarmed the KuuLa penalty box looking quite dangerous. The MynPa offensive culminated in an early header hitting the crossbar only to be cleared by the KuuLa defense. After about ten minutes the game leveled off with KuuLa managing to find their feet and occasionally produce a fine display of short passing football and nice combination play. A dangerous chance was created by Matti and Kari with Matti crossing the ball and Kari applying the finish which was only just scrambled away by the MynPa goalkeeper. In the 17th minute of play the ball again found its way to Matti who brilliantly centered the ball for the always-in-the-right-place Kari who characteristically thwacked™ the ball into the back of the net. The rest of the first half was evenly matched with both teams struggling to create any real chances, the exception being a MynPa effort from close range deflected by the KuuLa goalkeeper. The first half score of 0 - 1 was surely pleasing for the traveling fans.

The second half started in the same way that the first half had ended with both teams finding it difficult to penetrate the opposing defenses. In the 65th minute Teemu, who up until then had played a fantastic game as a central defender, had to come off due to an injury. This meant that midfield playmaker Staffan had to take a step down in the field. After this KuuLa found it increasingly difficult to keep a hold of the ball in midfield, with the balance of play switching ever more favorably in MynPa's direction. Still, the KuuLa defense held and MynPa could only produce a handful of set pieces mostly resulting in poor finishing. With MynPa more and more concentrating on attack space started to appear behind their back lines. KuuLa came very close to capitalizing on this opportunity with Leo firing off a thunderous drive that ended up hitting the crossbar. Hitting the crossbar seemed to be the theme of the evening as in the 80th minute MynPa completed this feat for the second time with a header from close range. The ball was subsequently cleared by the KuuLa defense for a corner kick with the score remaining 0 - 1. After the game there was a heated debate amongst the KuuLa players pertaining to whether or not the ball had actually crossed the goal line with the two centre-halfs being of the opinion that it had and the goalkeeper being of a strong opposing opinion. As goal line technology has yet to be introduced into Finnish division five football we will never know if the ball did indeed cross the goal line, a final argument to the opposite is that the MynPa players never celebrated the goal nor did they, in any way, protest the decision to continue play.

The KuuLa players continued to fight bravely right until the end of the game. Unfortunately, an all too familiar scenario was once again about to rear its ugly head. For the fourth time this season KuuLa was about to concede a goal and loose a lead in the dying minutes of a game. In the 93rd minute, one of MynPa's fast wingers struggled his way through the defensive line and managed to get a shot on goal which was deflected right into the path of another MynPa player who was left with the simple task of finishing in a practically empty goal. After the equalizer the game was for all intents and purposes done and the game ended in a 1 - 1 draw. The final scoreline was a fair reflection of the game and neither side can complain too much. However, to lose two points in the last minutes of a game is an unpleasant experience and it will surely have left the KuuLa players with a bad taste in the mouth. All of the KuuLa players performed well on the day with, in my humble opinion, a stand out performance by Matti.
