Match report: KuuLa-Lieto 1-3 (1-0)
17.05.2017 at Parkin Kenttä

After a tight loss and a draw in the two first games of the season, KuuLa was determined to take their first victory in their home premiere against Lieto at Parkin Kenttä. The weather was cloudy, rainy and a little cold, that is, very nice weather compared to the snowfall at the first game of the season. Exceptionally for the home games only a couple of KuuLa scarfs could be spotted among the spectators this time. The KuuLa starting line-up from left to right in a 4-4-1-1 formation was; Henrik - Juha, Hadi, Lukas, Jan - Antsa, Nikolai, Staffan, Ville - Moritz – Kari. Worth mentioning is that the KuuLa managing and scouting team had scouted the opponents number 11, Niko Vello, as an especially dangerous threat to our defense and therefore one of our central-midfielders Nikolai was assigned to mark him throughout the game. Substitutions made: 37’ Jan out, Fidde in and 46’ Antsa out, Johannes in.

First half

KuuLa got an amazing start to the game by scoring a goal after only three minutes into the first half when Antsa on the left wing gave an accurate cross into the box to Staffan who scored with a fabulous header. After the goal Lieto started to take over more and more of the ball possession, however, KuuLa’s defense was strong and the marking of Lieto’s #11 seemed to work out very well. Also, Henrik seemed to have a good day between the posts and he made several important saves keeping KuuLa in the lead during the first half of the game. Lieto played quite rough, which the referees of the game allowed, and KuuLa had to step up a level from their normal play to keep up in the one-to-one situations. Ville at the right wing was again very active throughout the game and was therefore target for a lot of tackles, the Lieto team even showed some advanced MMA skills when one of the players grabbed Ville’s leg and flipped him over in a situation near the sideline. Following this the referee discussed with the assistant referee at the sideline and they both seemed to agree on that the players could calm down a little bit, no further actions(!). All in all, first half was a solid performance by KuuLa.

Second half

Second half continued on the same trend as the first one with Lieto taking over the game more and more, maybe it was Lieto improving their game or KuuLa getting tired and loosing focus. Already after 48 minutes Lieto scored on one of their many corners during the game. Of course, goal scorer was #11, Vello. KuuLa was not able to produce much of controlled attacks during the second half, basically only a few good personal performances lead to potential goal scoring opportunities as Lieto was dominating ball possession. This resulted in Lieto taking the lead after 79’ by a wonderful long shot from the Lieto centre-back Juuso Elmeranta, leaving Henrik whithout a chance of making the save. Following this KuuLa left the marking of Lieto #11 to enable Nikolai taking a bigger role in the offense. Also, Hadi was lifted to striker from his position at centre-back towards the end of the game. Even this did not help KuuLa and instead Lieto’s Kalle Valtola was able to score his team’s third goal and the last goal of the game from a rebound as Lieto found their way through KuuLa’s defense at 82 minutes played.

Summary

In this match, it was still visible that KuuLa have had quite of a generation shift coming into this season. Many of the new players showed great skills and the entire team was playing with an excellent attitude and fighting spirit. This time this was not enough and more practicing will be needed before learning to play as a team for the entire 90 minutes and get out the full potential of all the players during the matches. The season has only just started and KuuLa will get stronger and better for every game!
